The Importance of Color in Video

Color is very important when making a film. Each color has a feeling it will bring out in the viewer. For instance, Fargo is very blue. This matches the cold weather outside, but also matches character traits giving off by the main character. This gives inside to the character Jerry Lunegaard.

In this video, Robert Kerner explains the a different technique to color correct. He has these Chip Charts. Chip Charts are kind of like print splotches that you can get a hardware store. But these cards have cool colors and white to pick from that would be easy to put in the camera bag before the shoot. He goes farther explaining how to use them in post production.

He is a big supporter of using the chip chart cards when filming something. Kerner has good reason to. He describes how easy they are to use in post production. He even showed the viewer the before and after, which I thought improved his argument. The fact that this was a video made it easier for the view to under what he was explain, especially by the end when he was editing. Kerner made the information he was presenting easy to understand in an efficient way. There were a couple of times where I tough he could've come to his next point fast. He was standing by a couple of signs to make it easier to show the before and after. But I feel he could've picked a different location. The shadows on his face are really harsh. The shot could've been tighter on him. I felt it was awkward to see half his calf.

I think that Kerner was very convincing. As a student, I am also looking for things to do during pst production to make what I record that much better. There are things that I might forget to do during filming. Being able to and knowing how to work on those things after I have shot the video is a valuable skill. This information is just one way to improve my work! I am really excited to try this out. I've never really used color correct before so I'm reverse that when I try to use this technique I wouldn't do it right.
